Ingredients

  • 450 ml water (still)
  • 50 ml fresh lemon juice (or orange juice)
  • 20 g honey
  • 1/4 tsp fine salt

Instructions

  1. 1

Squeeze the lemon (or orange) to obtain 50 ml of fresh juice. Strain to remove seeds.

  2. 2

Combine the water, lemon juice, and honey in a 500 ml sports bottle or pitcher. Seal and shake vigorously until the honey is fully dissolved.

  3. 3

Add the fine salt and shake again. (Sodium is essential for electrolyte balance and intestinal water absorption.)

  4. 4

Taste — the drink should be lightly sweet and faintly salty, not syrupy. Adjust honey or salt as needed.

  5. 5

Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes, or add a few ice cubes directly to the bottle.

  6. 6

Sip 200–300 ml every 30 minutes during your workout. For efforts >90 min, prepare a second 500 ml bottle.

Diabetes tips

This drink helps prevent exercise-induced hypoglycemia during efforts over 60 minutes — sip 200–300 ml every 30 minutes. Carbs come from honey (GI ~58) and lemon juice, which provide steadier energy than pure glucose. Use your usual dosing method agreed with your care team to check whether a correction is needed after exercise; insulin requirements during activity vary greatly by individual. Log your hydration and CGM readings in your journal to find your optimal drinking pattern.
