France's beloved shepherd's pie: seasoned ground beef topped with a creamy, golden-crusted mashed potato gratin. A comfort classic that the whole family loves — with precise carb counts to help you manage your bolus.
Peel and dice potatoes. Boil in salted water 20 min until very tender. Drain, then mash with butter, warm milk, nutmeg, salt, and pepper until smooth and creamy.
Heat olive oil in a large pan. Cook finely chopped onion and garlic 3 min. Add ground beef and cook 8 min, breaking it up with a spoon.
Stir in tomato paste, broth, and thyme. Simmer 10 min until sauce thickens. Season well.
Preheat oven to 200°C (400°F). Spread meat mixture in a 30×20cm (12×8") baking dish. Cover evenly with mashed potato. Rough up the surface with a fork for a crispier crust. Sprinkle with Gruyère.
Bake 20–25 min until the top is golden and cheese is bubbling. Rest 5 min before serving.
Carbs come mainly from mashed potatoes (GI ~75–80) — a fast blood sugar rise to expect. Inject 15–20 min before eating. The fat from cream and cheese slows absorption slightly, but also extends the rise 2–3h later. Consider a dual-wave bolus. Use your usual dosing method agreed with your care team and log this meal.
